Be Safe In Naples
Naples does have somewhat of a reputation as a gangster town, with mafia families settling scores violently, but it would unfair to label it as such to tourists. It’s a popular destination and the local authorities try hard to keep it safe for the many visitors. All the same, much like Barcelona, the unsuspecting tourist crowds perpetuate the crime here, some of which is second nature to certain Neopolitans.
Safety
The two biggest threats when in Naples are pickpockets and mad moped drivers. With the crowds during the summer, light fingered locals thrive on distracting tourists and relieving them of their wallets. Pickpockets abound in popular areas and busy plazas or piazzas. Others operate off the back of scooters and are lightning-quick at appearing out of nowhere and escaping before you have a chance to react.
The local police are fairly efficient, but they deal with an enormous amount of pickpocket charges daily. Unless you have an insurance claim to make, it’s hardly worth the hassle of communicating the incident. By far the bigger complaint is people getting knocked over by speeding mopeds, due to their lack of experience in keep an eye when crossing the street or standing in the way on blind corners. Riding a moped on your own increases the risk of accident if you are inexperienced with the roads and driving habits of locals. Car theft is also a major problem in Naples.

Health
A good health care system in Italy is available to foreign visitors, but you should ensure that you have your travel insurance in order to avoid complications and payment misunderstandings. There are few diseases or hygiene problems to be concerned with unless you find yourself in one of the poor suburbs with bad sanitation. Sunburn and moped accidents are more common and care should be taken to avoid both.
