Genoa Health And Safety
When travelling to an unfamiliar city such as Genoa, be alert for potential hazards and pickpockets. Genoa is generally a safe city for tourists when walking the streets during the day or in the evening. However, as with anywhere, the city has its share of criminals and undesirables, so be sure to follow sensible courses of action, so as to not fall victim to them.
Safety
Holidaymakers are more susceptible to theft or loss of personal effects. Language barriers and strange routines can also result in problems with travel arrangements. If arriving at Principe Station after dark, cling on to your valuables while moving through the station and avoid the notorious via di Prè alley nearby, which is a place to be avoided.
We recommend you take out an insurance policy before travelling to cover against theft, loss and illness or injury. If you have a good all-risks home insurance policy, it may cover your possessions against loss or theft even when overseas. Many private medical schemes also offer coverage plans for abroad including baggage loss, cancellation or curtailment and cash replacement as well as sickness or accident.

Health
Tap water is generally safe to drink in Genoa, but bottled water is advised. The inscription ‘acqua non potabile’ means that the water is not drinkable. Milk is pasteurised and dairy products are safe for consumption, with local meat, poultry, seafood, fruit and vegetables considered safe to eat.
Leishmaniasis (cutaneous and visceral), sandfly fever, West Nile virus and typhus, though rare, may occur along the Mediterranean coast. Echinococcosis and brucellosis also occur, although they are also rare.
