Getting Around In Bologna
Getting around Bologna is fairly easy on foot or by bicycle, as many of the districts offer great cobbleseone streets, ideal for wandering around. Indeed, many of the students at the university opt to travel by bicycle. Still, it’s not difficult to utilise the public bus system or navigate the roads yourself by car hire. For a real Italian experience, try renting a motorbike or a scooter and travel as many of the locals do.
By bus
The public bus system, run by ATC, is easy to use and very efficient for getting around Bologna. Information booths are on view at the coach and train stations as well as on via Marconi and the tourist office has maps detailing the routes. Buses run daily from 06:00 to 23:00, and tickets are available at train stations, newsagents, tobacco shops and many bars as well as at tourist information offices. One ticket enables passengers to switch trains, or even make a return trip if departing within the hour of the initial validation punch. A day pass is also available, covering the equivalent of eight tickets, to maximise your travel day.

Taxis
Taxis can be difficult to find and expensive in Bologna. Hailing them from the street may seem impossible and calling a taxi in advance may incur an extra charge for the driver to arrive at your pick up point. However, the train station and the Piazza Maggiore have taxi ranks where you can pick up a definite ride. Be forewarned that many taxi drivers will add on as many charges as possible to your journey, such as for carrying luggage or surcharges for late-night journeys. The fares are also calculated to include taxes and a service charge, and tipping is optional.
Tourist services
Guided bus and walking tours are available in Bologna, leading visitors to the historic landmarks and attractions while giving them background and context to the sites.
From the airport
Travel between Bologna Guglielmo Marconi International Airport and the city centre, only a six kilometre trip, is easy, though transport options are limited. Car hire is available from the airport and a taxi rank is located outside the Arrivals Hall at Terminal A. The Aerobus shuttle connect the airport with the city centre, running every 20 minutes, with a 20-minute journey time. Note that you can also secure a hire car by pre-booking online, ensuring that a vehicle is available for you upon arrival.
