Travel to Bergamo
Set in Lombardy on the edge of the Alps, Bergamo is an historic old town with little traffic. Most of the citys famous sights are located in the Citta Alta (upper town) which is the historic heart of Bergamo.
Transportation to Bergamo
Bergamo is served by Orio al Serio Airport, which has frequent flights from other Italian and European cities, including Ryanair flights from London. A shuttle bus takes passengers into Bergamo every 30 minutes. Milans Malpensa Airport, 50kms northwest of Bergamo, is also a major gateway. The main motorway for cars journeying to Bergamo from Milan is the A4.
Trains arrive in Bergamo from Milan once every hour; the trip takes an hour and costs 5. Additionally, trains from Rome arrive every hour, but services from Naples and other southern cities are less frequent. Buses arrive from Milan once every 30 minutes.
What to see
one of Bergamos most popular attractions is outside the town wall on via della Nuca. The Accademia Carrara is a 200-year-old art gallery containing works by Botticelli, Bellini, Mantegna and others.
The Citta Alta is connected to the more modern new town by funiculars and roads; highlights here include the Palazzo della Ragione with its 12th century portico, and the medieval church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The Citta Alta is also a lovely area for long walks.
Outdoors lovers will feel refreshed at the park nestled at the base of the Rocca, as well as at the adjoining Botanical Garden. The tiny hilltop settlement of San Vigilio, which contains the grassy ruined fortress of Castello, offers superb mountain views and is well worth exploring.
Day trips
The thriving fashion metropolis of Milan is just one hour's travel from Bergamo. Here you can shop for designer items, people-watch from trendy cafs, or visit the famous Gothic cathedral. The panoramic views from the top of the cathedral are breathtaking.
Lake Como, a famously beautiful area, is also a short drive away. The area's enchanting aura has attracted poets and writers throughout the centuries. Tourists flock here to cruise on the waters and relax in the opulent hotels. You can also linger around the medieval streets and enjoy a meal at some of Italy's best restaurants.
Further afield, Mantua was the home of the Roman poet, Virgil. It still retains much of its magnetism and has some appealing architecture.
Activities and leisure
Bergamo is a haven for designer shopping, although traditional handicrafts can be purchased in the old town. Pastries and sweet delicacies are a speciality of the town; however, youll also find plenty of quality restaurants serving the best in northern Italian cuisine.
Safety issues
Bergamo is an excellent holiday destination, but always try to remain alert to possible dangers. Driving can place you at a greater risk of having an accident. Travellers should also be aware of pickpockets. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family.
