Bergamo Health And Safety
Those who choose to hire a car during their visit to Bergamo are advised to familiarise themselves with road rules and local driving etiquette. The combination of winding roads and the driving speed of the locals can place you at a greater risk of having an accident.
Safety
Bergamo has a reputation as an excellent holiday destination, but it is best to always be alert to possible dangers. As is true in most areas frequented by tourists, you should beware of pickpockets. Bergamo has some areas that are not considered to be safe for walking at night. On the left side of the train station, via Bonomelli and via Paleocapa, and on the right hand side, the area leading to the bus platform, are to be avoided after dark. If you must be in these areas at night, you are advised to take a taxi. Its always a good idea to leave any valuables locked away in the hotel safe if you want to avoid attracting unwanted interest.
Health
There are no particular health risks for visitors to Bergamo, but it is best to be aware of the local standards regarding hospital and emergency care. There are private hospitals and clinics offering a range of medical services. Visitors are required to pay hospital charges in full and later claim reimbursement from their personal insurance. Some private hospitals will accept credit cards and some will agree to bill patients after they are discharged. For EU citizens, free medical treatment in public hospitals is available.
Travel insurance
Travel can be an exciting adventure but can also lead to unexpected situations. Trip cancellations, theft and loss can occur regardless of the precautions you may take. The most serious risk though is that of injury or illness in a foreign country. Even if you have coverage for basic medical treatment, unanticipated events such as emergency evacuations, reunions or repatriation are not normally covered, so additional travel cover can be well worth the cost.
