Things to do in Bari

Many sightseeing options are available in Bari such as walking through the streets of the Old Town and enjoying its attractions. The streets alone are fascinating to walk along as they were built in a complicated manner in order to confuse invaders.

The Old Town

Built in such a complex way, a stroll through the old citys maze can be a real adventure and due to the location of some outstanding pizzerias in the area, it might be rewarding too. If you feel like you need to walk off your pizza, there are plenty of sights and attractions such as churches and monuments that can be viewed in this quaint and ancient Italian part of town.

The Basilica di San Nicola

This impressive Norman Cathedral contains some of Italys highest quality stonework. The cathedral was consecrated in 1197 and can be found in the heart of Baris Old Town. During the Crusades, the relics of San Nicola were taken from the Byzantines and can still be seen in the church today, which has remained their home for centuries. The centrepiece and most popular attraction at this church is undoubtedly the Episcopal throne beyond the mosaic. Although the 12th century altar canopy and the mosaics behind the altar are also well worth viewing.

The Cattedrale di San Sabino

This building is situated very close to the basilica and has lasted for over 900 years. The church has hardly changed since it was first built, which is what makes the building so fascinating. The church has a medieval ambience and is completed with a timber roof.

The Museo Archeologico

Situated in the new city, the Museo Archeologico boasts an interesting collection of artefacts from this region. These include pieces from the Peucetic and Messapian peoples.
