Shannon Health And Safety

Shannon is a relatively small town and is safer than most of the larger cities in Ireland, but normal precautions should be followed. Most visitors enjoy a fairly high level of personal safety here, but they can still be susceptible to dangers and petty crimes.

Safety

Extra caution should be taken to safeguard passports and wallets from pickpockets and bag snatchers, especially in the tourist areas. Terrorism is no more of a threat here than in other Western countries. Roads are more dangerous during the summer and on holiday weekends due to an increase in traffic. Road conditions are generally good, but the smaller country lanes can be narrow, uneven and winding.

Health

There are no special vaccinations required for travelling to Ireland, nor any particular health hazards beyond those of taking care when visiting an unknown place. Modern medical facilities are available throughout the country.

Travel insurance

Buying travel insurance with a good quality cover should be a priority, and we strongly recommend you take out comprehensive travel insurance for you and your family.

Accidents are far more likely to happen when on holiday, and covering the cost of treatment can be very expensive. A good policy will protect you and help replace your belongings if they are stolen, while also covering you against cancellations and delays.

Ireland has free reciprocal health agreements with many countries under the European Health Insurance Card. Each country has different rules about medical provision. In many countries, you will have to pay part or all of the cost and then claim a refund. The card gives access to state-provided medical treatment only and does not cover medical repatriation costs or on-going illnesses. A comprehensive insurance policy is the only way of guaranteeing full cover.
