Limerick has a wide range of lodging options, with everything from dormitory beds in youth hostels to five-star suites in castles. Keeping pace with the overall revival of Limerick’s historical charm, a large number of bed and breakfasts have opened over the past few years. These moderately-priced inns are among the most charismatic places to stay in town. Often housed in original Georgian buildings, they always come with a traditional hearty Irish breakfast and friendly staff.

Where to stay

There are a number of reliable, if not typical, three-star hotels along Ennis road, at the edge of the city. For something even more central, check out the Royal George Hotel on O’Connell street. Glentworth street is another central area where you can find some lovely accommodation in restored Georgian buildings. The neighbourhood around the Colbert Railway Station also has a handful of hotels, such as the Railway Hotel, a quintessential Irish establishment. However, this area, with its busy nightlife scene, tends to be a bit noisy.

If you feel like splurging, consider a night or two at the five-star Bunratty Castle Hotel, considered by some polls to be the finest lodging in Ireland. The Derrynagittagh House, about 15 miles north of the city, is a lovely 18th century residence, set among mature gardens. For an equal dose of Irish charm, consider one of the city’s many B&Bs. Reasonably priced and full of warmth, many of these old inns can be found along Ennis road and Davis street.

When to visit

The majority of tourists come to Limerick in July and August, the traditional holiday period for most of Europe and the UK. During the high season, you can expect almost all of the charming B&Bs to be fully booked as well as many of the hotels. Be sure to make your room reservation well in advance if you plan to visit during the summer.

A better time to come to Limerick is during the spring or autumn. The weather is cool and refreshing, and although most of the attractions around the city are still open, there are very few crowds.
