Be Safe in Limerick

Despite its reputation as a tough town, Limerick shouldn’t present any problems to your safety or health. However, along with the city’s increased popularity as a tourist destination, petty crime has been on the rise. By taking a few simple precautions, you can remove most of the potential for becoming a victim.

Safety

History has treated Limerick rather harshly and left this city with a reputation for toughness and criminal violence. Residents half-jokingly refer to Limerick as ‘stab city’, which derives from the perceived levels of gang-related violence here. However, most locals will insist that Limerick is no more dangerous than other large cities in Ireland, and this nickname is not deserved.

That being said, Limerick is certainly more dangerous than your average city and extra precautions should be taken during your visit. The usual array of petty crime exists such as muggings and theft, and tourists are often on the receiving end of this bad fortune. Be particularly careful around the tourist attractions and on buses and trains.

To avoid being mugged, don’t walk by yourself and stay out of dark and isolated parts of the city at night. Keep an eye out when you use the ATM machines as well, especially after dark. Theft from cars is another major problem in Limerick. If you are driving or renting a car, don’t keep anything of value in it and always park your vehicle in your hotel's parking lot, not on the street.

The worst element of violence in Limerick comes from the gang-related activity which is unfortunately a big part of life here. Most of the trouble stems from gang wars and long-standing family feuds, which have resulted in kidnappings and executions. However, this should not concern the average visitor, as gangs rarely attack a tourist unprovoked. Keep in mind that this danger exists and be prepared to get out of the way should you unexpectedly run across trouble.

Health

There are no serious health risks in Limerick which should cause you concern. The quality of the tap water is good and it is safe to drink; however, it’s advisable to stick to bottled water, as your stomach will not be used to the difference in microbes. The food in Limerick’s restaurants is typically up to international standards, but make sure your street stall food has been thoroughly cooked.

Keep in mind that rain can come at any time of the year in Limerick, quickly and unexpectedly. Always carry a rain jacket or umbrella with you when you head out. Getting caught in a shower without protection can easily give you a nasty cold, which will put a damper on your holiday.

If you fall ill during your visit, there are excellent medical facilities right in Limerick. Citizens of the EU should be covered by their own insurance plan, but visitors from other countries should get some travel insurance to cover any unexpected hospital costs. The price of travel insurance is very small compared to an Irish medical bill.
