Killarney Health And Safety

Most visitors enjoy a fairly high level of personal safety here; however, travellers should take sensible precautions against petty theft. Terrorism is no more a threat here than in other Western countries.

Safety

Crime here is relatively low by most European standards. Late night streets in cities can be dangerous anywhere therefore you should exercise caution when out at night. The police force is known as an garda sochana (or just garda), though informally the English term guard is the usual reference for a policeman/women. The term police is rarely used. Regardless of what name you use, they are generally unarmed, courteous and approachable, should you have any problems.

Health

There are no special health requirements for visitors to Ireland. Since March 2004, almost all places of work in Ireland, including bars, restaurants and cafs, have been designated as smoke-free. Hotels and B&Bs are not required by law to be smoke-free, but many are.

Travel insurance

Health insurance is advisable unless you are from the UK or another EU country, most of which have reciprocal agreements with Ireland. A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) should be obtained before departing for travel to Ireland. Medical facilities are good, and payment for treatment is usually required in cash.
