We strongly recommend you take out comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your family even if you are only making a weekend trip to Dublin. A good policy will protect you and help replace your belongings if they are stolen, and also cover you against cancellations and delays. Accidents are also more likely to happen when on holiday, and covering the cost of treatment can be very expensive. Buying travel insurance with a good quality cover should be a priority.

Ireland has reciprocal health agreements with other EU member states under the European Health Insurance Card. This may mean that some treatment is free, but often you will have to pay part or all of the cost and then claim a refund. The card gives access to medical treatment only and does not cover repatriation costs or ongoing illnesses. A comprehensive insurance policy is the only way of guaranteeing that you will be fully covered.
