Dublin has a good mix of plush, modern hotels to grand old guesthouses and simple B&Bs. There has been a property boom recently and new hotels and guesthouses continue to appear in both the centre and previously unfashionable areas. Prices are not cheap, but there are good deals to be had if you search around, especially if you are visiting out of season or for a short mid-week break.

The central district is generally the most expensive area, but you can find reasonably priced accommodation to the north of the city centre and in many of the suburbs. Some of the big hotels tend to be overpriced for what they offer, while B&Bs are plentiful and of a high standard.

If you are on a limited budget, there is a good choice of hostels. Some can be found in central locations and have a limited number of private rooms. There are also a few campsites just outside of Dublin.

Booking is essential during the summer months and at weekends as demand is very high. If you arrive without a reservation then the tourist office on Suffolk street can supply information on places with availability.

Where to stay

Temple Bar area has been transformed in to a busy commercial centre, packed with numerous restaurants, cafés and bars. It has a great central location and is convenient for many of the city's attractions. There is a huge choice of places to stay including good hotels and guesthouses.

Some of the finest hotels and most expensive property can be found near Grafton street, St Stephen's Green and Merrion Square. Prices reflect the upmarket nature of this district.

The area to the north of the River Liffey has always been considered downmarket; however, there is considerable redevelopment work going on and many new property developments have already been completed, and new bridge links this area to Temple Bar, making it more accessible. Prices are cheaper here than in other parts of the city, so it's worth considering the options available if you have a limited budget.
