Derry is the second largest city in Northern Ireland, with a population of over 100,000 people, and it is a social and cultural centre with a confident, modern outlook. For a long time, the city has been important because of its position at the mouth of the Foyle River.

There is a good choice of modern, three and four-star hotels in and around Derry. A typically Irish institution, bed and breakfasts offer visitors a more personal and hospitable experience, with most of these places being family run. B&Bs range from traditional town and country homes to modern bungalows. Another option is to rent a self-catering apartment or bungalow, fully equipped with modern kitchen facilities for cooking your own food. From June to September, visitors can also book clean, modern accommodation on the Derry University campus, only minutes from the airport. There are also several hostels to choose from, which provide budget travellers with a unique social experience.

Many hotels are located in Bogside, the city centre near the Old City. Apart from this area, accommodation choices are spread out across the city and on the other side of the River Foyle.
