Ireland has a reciprocal health agreement with other EU member states under the European Health Insurance Card. This may mean that some treatment is free, but often you will have to pay part or all of the cost and then claim a refund. The card gives access to medical treatment only and does not cover repatriation costs or ongoing illnesses. A comprehensive insurance policy is the only way of guaranteeing that you will be fully covered.
