Belfast is not especially famous for any sports and probably not the best place to head if sporting activities come high on your holiday agenda. There are opportunities to engage in keep-fit or outdoor pursuits that make use of the city’s surrounding countryside, but very few opportunities for enjoying sport in a spectator capacity.

Spectator sports

There aren’t a great deal of opportunities for watching sports in Belfast and it would be reasonable to say that most visitors don’t head for the city with this kind of activity in mind. If, however, you are a lover of the great game then you might want to catch a football match at Windsor Park, where local team Linfield FC play matches in the Irish Premier League. Alternatively, if you enjoy watching local teams or sports people competing, you should make a trip to the Belfast Tourist Information Office (Bloomfield House, 395/405 Newtownards road), which can provide you with details of local rugby games, swim meetings, gymnastic competitions and so on.

Participant sports

Belfast is a city without weather conditions or terrain suited to any specific sporting activities and you might expect to find the same general pursuits available that any city with rural surroundings has to offer. Within the city, there’s no shortage of fitness centres where you can head for a workout; although most are private and membership is required, there are municipal centres operating on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Head out into the countryside and pursuits such as fishing, hiking, fell walking, rock climbing and mountain biking are all available, although you will need to bring your own equipment.
