Reykjavík is small enough that you can easily travel from one side to the other in around 15 to 20 minutes by car. So, if you are content with using a taxi or a hired car, it doesn't matter very much where your accommodation is located. You’ll find that walking is convenient for both shopping and sightseeing, and what is most important is that you book well in advance, as hotels are usually very busy during the summer months.

Hotel operators have an agreement with the government to be rated on a system of one to five stars, but relatively few hotels are actually rated. Iceland's major hotel chains, which have hotels in the capital and in other parts of the country, do carry ratings however. These include Icelandair hotels, with three and four-star ratings; Fosshotel, with hotels ranging from one to three stars; Edda, having summer hotels outside of Reykjavík only (and which are quite basic); and Kea, with hotels that run from two to four stars. Many of Reykjavík's best hotels, including the 101 Hotel, the Borg and the Frón, are independent and don’t carry a rating.

Where to stay

As you might expect, the top hotels are in or near the city centre. It’s also possible to find accommodation that’s relatively inexpensive in this area such as City Hotel, Hótel Krían or Hótel Garður. A luxury option within walking distance of the centre is Hótel Holt. You’ll find a substantial part of the hotel founder’s art collection on display at the hotel. Hótel Borg is right in the centre, situated just opposite the cathedral and the parliament. More convenient to recreational activities, including swimming pools, are Grand Hótel and Hótel Esja.

The number of lower cost options increases as you move farther from the centre, and also into the areas just outside of the capital. Hotels that are outside the centre include Hótel Vík, Ísafold and Lykilhótel Cabin, and there’s also Hótel Valhöll in Þingvellir. From the latter, it’s quite convenient to visit the site of the ancient Alþingi and some of the country’s spectacular geological formations. If you stay at Hótel Geysir, you can easily walk to the famous geyser, after which all other geysers were named.
