Reykjavik Transport

Reykjavik is quite a compact city and it is easy to navigate, whether on foot, by public transport or by car. In addition, truly magnificent countryside is just minutes away from the centre. Reykjavik can be explored at your own pace or on one of the organised tours available. Nearly everyone speaks English and people are usually very helpful in providing directions. Public transport, in the form of a bus network, is quite good, connecting Reykjavik and its suburbs. Taxis are always available.

By bus

There is an excellent bus system (Straeto) servicing the capital area. Most buses run every 20 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes in the evening and at the weekends. Information and schedules are available at the bus stations at Hlemmur and Laekjartorg, and also at the Tourist Information Centre, located at Adalstraeti 2. The Straeto website address is: www.bus.is/

A flat fare is charged on the buses, and exact change is required. If you need to transfer to another bus, ask for a transfer ticket (skiptimidi). You won’t have to pay again as long as you make the transfer within the time limit, which is normally 45 minutes.

Taxis

Several taxi companies operate in Reykjavik and it is quite easy to find a taxi on the street or arrange for one by phone from anywhere in the city. Some of the taxi companies offer special deals for transport to and from the airport. Taxis are required to have official meters, and standardised rates apply. Some of the main operators in the city are: Hreyfill-Bæjarleiðir (tel: +1 345 588 5522); B.S.R. Taxis (tel: +1 345 561 0000); Borgarbílastöðin (tel: +1 345 552 2440); and B.S.H. Taxis (tel: +1 345 555 0888).

Tourist services

The main Tourist Information Centre in Reykjavik is located at Bankastraeti 2. It is open in the summer every day from 08:30 to 19:00; and in winter, on Monday through to Saturday from 9:00 to 17:00, and on Sundays from 10:00 to 14:00. Phone: +1 345 562 3045; website: www.tourist.reykjavik.is.

A visitor pass, called the Reykjavik Card, can be purchased for a period of one to three days, and offers unlimited transport on city buses and free admission to the geothermal swimming pools and most galleries and museums. The pass can be purchased at the Tourist Information Centre at City Hall and at the BSÍ Central Bus Station, many hotels, guesthouses and city attractions.
