Be Safe in Budapest

There are no health warnings for visitors to Hungary at the time of writing and healthcare services in Budapest are adequate. With regards to safety, there are incidents regarding petty thieves and scam ‘artists’ who prey on tourists, but nothing of a particularly serious nature. As with any foreign travel, comprehensive travel insurance coverage is a sensible precaution.

Safety

As in most major cities, petty theft and tourist scams are relatively common. A few precautions can ensure a safe and trouble-free holiday. Favourite haunts for pickpockets are the Castle (Vár) area in Buda, Váci utca and any of the other streets around the main attractions or frequented by large numbers of people.

Police have also warned tvisitors o be on guard on the crowded Metro cars and trams numbers 4 and 6. Be aware of groups that appear to be arguing or fighting, as this is often a diversion set up by pick-pockets. Also be wary of over friendly young women in the area around Váci utca. They may invite you for what seems to be a harmless drink, but many people later find that they have been tricked, when they are presented with an enormous drinks bill and prevented from leaving by equally enormous bouncers.

The Hungarian police (rendörség) frequently patrol streets in the busier tourist areas. You should be aware that there have been reports of ‘fake policemen’ asking visitors for identification and travel documents, and even money and credit cards, with the aim of defrauding them. Legitimate police officers wear blue uniforms, display a badge and carry photo identification.

Health

There are no particular health concerns for travellers to Hungary, and no special health precautions or vaccinations are required. It's always a good idea, however, to have a record with you that lists your blood type, any allergies you may have and any medications you may be taking.

If you are a citizen of the EU, there is a reciprocal agreement in place by which Hungary will provide you with free emergency healthcare. Non-emergency situations aren’t currently covered, so having travel insurance is a good idea. Similarly, travellers from countries outside the EU should ensure that they have adequate medical coverage.
