Thessaloniki Health And Safety

Thessaloniki is a relaxed city and tourists generally enjoy stress-free holidays here. As with all travel though, there are a few things to take note of, and taking out a good travel insurance policy is a must.

Health

There are no specific health risks in Thessaloniki, although the sun can be fierce in the summer months therefore sunburn and dehydration are a risk. It is essential to take care in the middle of the day and to drink plenty of water.

UK nationals can have the costs of any emergency hospital treatment refunded, due to an agreement between the UK and Greek governments. An EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) should be taken with you for this reason.

Safety

Thessaloniki is a relatively safe place to visit and violent crime rates are low here. Tourists should take care with their belongings in busy places, including on busy buses, as there may be a risk of pickpockets or bag snatchers operating. The area around the train station is best avoided late at night, particularly if you are walking alone. There can be a lot of traffic in the city, leading to some erratic driving at times, so whether you are a pedestrian or driving yourself, be mindful of fast moving vehicles.

Travel insurance

Although mishaps are rare on a holiday in Thessaloniki, sometimes things happen that are unavoidable and so taking out a comprehensive travel insurance policy is a prerequisite for a trip here. If you are unlucky, travel insurance will help to minimise the stress and ensure that your holiday is not ruined.
