There are three choices you need to make regarding accommodation on Santorini; whether you want to stay on the volcano side of the island on the high cliffs above the volcano or at one of the beaches on the east coast, or inland in one of the island’s interesting villages.

The volcano accommodation on the west of the island is also known as ‘Caldera’, and accommodation here tends to be more expensive due to the stunning views. Caldera accommodation usually consists of small units on different levels, as building regulations are quite strict in this area. Most of the accommodation here have swimming pools, but note that staying at the higher level can involve climbing down a considerable number of steps. The Santorini Princess Spa Hotel is considered one of the best and the views from here are spectacular.

The east coast, which in contrast to the west, slopes gently into the sea, also offers some excellent options. The long, black sandy beach at Kamari is popular and has a good range of accommodation, as do all the main beach areas here, with a choice of hotels, villas and studios. Alongside Kamari, Perissa and Monilithos join to make up the three most popular beaches on this side of the island. All of these beaches are characterised by black sand and deep blue water. If you want to stay by the beach but are looking for something a little quieter, then Perivolos Beach is a small beach with rooms available and a selection of nice tavernas.

Staying in one of the villages inland is also a popular option. The island is small, so most villages are too far from the beach and there are some great views to be had of the beach or Caldera side of the island from many inland vantage points. The village of Pyrgos is at the highest point of the island and has some luxury hotels. Megalochori and Emporio are the closest inland villages to the beach, with Perissa and Perivolos within easy reach. The village areas don’t tend to have the same volume or range of accommodation choices, but they have some good higher end hotels.

There are also some good campsites on the island for those adventure tourists, the main ones being at Perissa Beach, Fira and Megalohori.

Airport hotels

The island is only around seven miles north to south and four miles west to east, so nowhere here is too far from the airport. Monolithos is the nearest of the beach resorts to the airport, a popular resort, but slightly quieter than those at Kamari and Perissa and it can get quite windy here too. There is a reasonable selection of hotels, apartments, cafés and restaurants in Monolithos.
