Although Paros lies at the heart of one of Greece’s most popular collection of island – the Cyclades, it still has a very traditional feel to it and it hasn’t been spoilt by rows of high-rise hotels lining its beaches. In fact, it doesn’t boast the trendy resort areas of Mykonos or Crete, and many of the hotels are small, family-run affairs that fit in discreetly.

The two main centres are Parakia – the island’s chief town, and Naoussa, which is a quaint village on the northern side of the island. Marpissa, over on the east side, is a delightful fishing village and is sough after by those seeking a quieter, upmarket venue. There are literally dozens of hotels and guesthouses on the island, mostly found in these three settlements or in close proximity. They are usually low-rise affairs offering a range of choices that include excellent value for money, luxury and also down-to-earth, simple places in a typical Cycladic style. Many establishments have their own pools and comfortable villas. Some are located on small private bays away from the busy areas.

In Parakia, you’ll find the best selection by far and it’s small enough to have a ‘villagy’ feel about it. The beach to the north of the harbour, where the island’s ferries arrive, isn’t bad and the small market lanes of the town are delightful for night shopping or for watching the world go by on a lazy afternoon. During the high season of July and August, the island gets busy and pre-booking is essential. If you arrive during the season’s fringes, you’ll be lucky to find something on-the-spot. During the winter, many places are closed.
