Mykonos Health And Safety

Visitors usually enjoy a trouble-free holiday in Mykonos, but there are still a few health and safety precautions to be taken, this is especially true with regards to the hot sun in the summer months or if you intend to participate in the water sports on offer. Tourists should take out a comprehensive travel insurance policy prior to departure.

Health

There are no specific health risks or requirements for travel to Mykonos. Tap water is drinkable, but for a short visit, many tourists stick to bottled water. Black Sea urchins with sharp spines are sometimes found clinging to the rocks in shallow water; although they are not poisonous, standing on one can be an irritant.

The sunny weather is one of the big draws for tourists to Mykonos, but sunburn and dehydration can quickly ruin a holiday, so make sure you take precautions in the hot sun and drink plenty of water.

UK nationals can have the costs of any emergency hospital treatment refunded, due to reciprocal agreements between the UK and Greek governments. A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) should be taken with you for this reason.

Safety

There are not many specific safety concerns for travellers to Mykonos and street crime is rare, but tourists should still take precautions. Try not to carry large amounts of money with you and do not leave valuables unattended when at the beach. Some of the quieter areas of the resorts can be poorly lit at night, so it might be a good idea to take a torch for returning to your accommodation. Water sports such as jet-skiing, waterskiing, scuba diving and windsurfing are popular here and tourists should make sure they are sensible and take note of any safety rules.

Travel insurance

As with any trip, taking out a comprehensive travel insurance policy is an absolute prerequisite for a trip to Mykonos. If you plan to enjoy some of the many water sports activities on offer, make sure you have an insurance policy that will cover you. Although accidents and theft are rare, sometimes things do happen and the simple task of taking out travel insurance can save you a lot of disappointment and money.
