Athens Weather

The city’s Mediterranean climate makes it a fantastic year-round destination, although some visitors may find the summer months a bit stifling. While the city does experience some rain, it also lays claims to being one of the sunniest cities in Europe.

Mild winters

Winters in Athens are typically mild, with temperatures only dropping at night, and even then they remain at a comfortable level. There is also some rainfall during this period, but showers rarely last long, with quick and heavy downpours being more usual.

When to visit

Spring (May to June) and autumn (September to October) make for ideal times to visit. Many people prefer the cooler temperatures, which are more comfortable for sightseeing and touring. Springtime boasts fresh mornings and sunny days, while autumn is often cooler than spring. Both seasons require a lightweight sweater or jacket in the evenings.

Hot summers
Summers can be very hot and the heat mixed with car pollution and a busy urban centre can often put visitors off coming during this period. Average maximum temperatures reach 32°C and during the months of July and August, heat waves can occur, with temperatures soaring above 40°C.
