Stuttgart Leisure
Stuttgart is one of Europe’s greenest cities, and provides ample opportunity for pleasant cycling, running and other outdoor activities. The area is also renowned for its mineral waters and there are several mineral spas in the area that attract health-conscious visitors.
Major sporting events
The city was one of the 12 German cities to host the 2006 World Cup, with the 3rd and 4th place play-off held at the city’s Daimler Stadium. Beyond this, the city has long been involved in arranging major sporting events including the 1993 World Championships in Athletics. In 2007, the city is the European Sports Capital, with several different events planned.
Outdoor pursuits
The Upper, Middle and Lower Palace Gardens in the city centre form over five miles of green space, with parks interconnecting with each other. Walks are possible from the the Höhenpark (featuring a vintage model railway at Killesberg Messe) via Rosensteinpark and Wilhelma through to Schloßgarten and onto Schloßplatz. There are miles of walkways in this area for cyclists and joggers.
There’s a very pleasant cycle route which starts in Schloßgarten and continues towards Bad Canstatt, as far as Rosenheim Park. The route then follows the Neckar towards Esslingen or Plöchingen in one direction, or upriver towards Remseck and the large lake, Max-Eyth-See. There’s beautiful scenery en route including vineyards, the Necklar Valley and quaint gardens.
An excellent and safe children’s playground is situated at the corner of Pfarrstrasse and Katherinstrasse in the Bean Quarter, if you are looking for some diversion for the children. They’ll also enjoy the ride-on model railway in Höhenpark, which circumnavigates the park.
