Getting to Stuttgart
Stuttgart is well connected to the rest of Germany and Europe by air, road, rail and bus. There are international bus and rail services that link the city with most cities in Germany as well as European capitals like Paris. The A8 and A81 motorways facilitate motorists wanting to travel to destinations around Germany, with the A81 running south as far as the Swiss border. The airport serves over 100 destinations worldwide and is well connected to the city by public transport.
By car
The A8 provides access by car, when arriving from the east or west, while the A81 serves the city from the south and north. The A8 connects Stuttgart with Munich and Karlsruhe, while the A81 leads drivers to Singen and the Swiss border in the south as well as Heilbronn and Würtzburg to the north.
When arriving near the city, follow S-Zentrum signs to reach the centre. During rush hour, motorists are advised to avoid Pragsattel on the A81 when travelling from Ludwigsburg to the centre as well as when moving south along the A81 to Herrenberg on holidays and Fridays.
By rail
Stuttgart Central Station is well connected to destinations throughout Stuttgart by the S-Bahn, while destinations across Germany are served by high-velocity intercity, regional and express trains. Almost 30 daily trains run to Munich, with trips averaging 2 to 3 hours, while 19 trains travel to Frankfurt daily (1 hour, 30 minutes).
The Hauptbahnhof, Stuttgart’s main train station, is located to the east of the city centre. Tickets to all destinations are available inside from the DB ReiseZentrum rail travel agency, open on weekdays from 08:00 to 20:00; 09:00 to 16:00 on Saturdays and 13:00 to 18:00 on Sundays.
By bus
Long-distance bus services to Stuttgart are available from many European centres including Paris, London, Amsterdam and Vienna. The service is maintained by Deutschen Touring GmbH and Eurolines, with further information available at: www.touring.de. Passengers arriving in Stuttgart from other cities within Germany normally choose to travel by train because of the comfort and convenience.
By air
Stuttgart International Airport is served by most major domestic and international airlines, and the four terminals are located just 13kms south of downtown Stuttgart. The airport is conveniently connected to the city by the S2 and S3 lines of the S-Bahn, while a 24-hour taxi service also connects to the city-centre in approximately 20 minutes. Bus services are also available from the Arrivals level of Terminal 1, with connections available to Stuttgart and many other regional centres.
Stuttgart International Airport
Stuttgart International Airport is served by most major domestic and international airlines, with over 60 airline companies offering flights to over 110 destinations worldwide. The four terminals are located just 13kms south of Stuttgart: a 30-minute train trip to downtown. Passengers will find a central information kiosk on level 3 of Terminal 1, with multi-lingual staff on hand to deal with enquiries, while information is also available through courtesy phones located across the airport.
Shops are available in Terminal 1, with a supermarket located on level 3 of Terminal 2, while motorists can take advantage of the fast-food drive-through in the P4 car park. Refreshments are available at the cafés, bars and restaurants on levels 2, 3 and 4 of Terminal 1 as well as the bar on level 2 of Terminal 4. Duty-free shopping is also available in terminals 1 and 3, with further duty-free outlets present on level 2 of Terminal 4.
Information points are also located across the four terminals, with courtesy telephones offering passenger information. As the terminals are closely grouped, passengers can easily walk between them to reach the different airport facilities.
Terminal 1 offers a bank with full bureau de change facilities as well as a number of ATM machines. Airport luggage facilities include a lost property office (tel: +49 711 948 3355) and a porter service (tel: +49 711 948 4570).
Drivers are facilitated with a car repair service and an airport petrol station, while business travellers can take advantage of the conference rooms available from Kurz Aviation Services. Internet access is available at the Internet Office and also at computer terminals throughout the airport.
Disabled travellers are catered for with specially-designed lifts and ramps, while those requiring further assistance are advised to contact the relevant airline or travel agency in advance of arrival. Wheelchair-accessible toilets and telephones are located throughout the airport, with disabled parking clearly marked in the car parks.
Stuttgart International Airport transportation
The airport is well connected to Stuttgart by public transport and taxi services. S-Bahn Commuter trains S2 (Schorndorf) and S3 (Backnang) connect with Stuttgart’s Central Station (travel time: 30 minutes) and depart from the S-Bahn station located on level 1 of Terminal 1.
Taxis depart 24 hours from the taxi-rank on level 3 of Terminal 1, with travel times to Stuttgart taking just 20 minutes. Buses are on hand from the Arrivals level of Terminal 1, and direct buses travel to Stuttgart and other destinations.
