Munich Weather

Munich experiences a continental climate, with very warm weather in summer and quite cold winters.

Seasons

During summer evenings, there is significant rainfall accompanied by frequent thunderstorms, but the sunsets can be beautiful. Winter requires some warm clothing, with snow and sleet being common in the city at this time.

Alpine influences

Winters are cold, with light snowfall. The climate, however, is strongly influenced by its proximity to the Alps. Winds from the southwest cross the Alps and can bring warm conditions (called föhn) for short periods during any season, often raising temperatures markedly, even in the winter. When winds from the northwest cross the mountains, a condition known as Alpenstau occurs, usually during the spring and summer, bringing unseasonably low temperatures and rain, or infrequently, snow.

The minimum average temperatures occur in January, when 5°C is the low; and the maximum average temperatures occur in July and August, when 23°C is the high.
The Alps are only about 1 hour, 30 minutes by car from Munich. With optimum weather conditions, at any time of year, there can be crystal-clear views of these spectacular peaks.
