There is range of accommodation in Munich that should satisfy the needs of every type of traveller. Around the main train station, Hauptbahnhof, there are several youth hostels as well as upscale hotels such as Le Meridien and Sofitel. The Schwabing and Ostbahnhof areas feature many hotels and youth hostels as well.

Compared to other German cities, you will probably find that spending a night in a Munich hotel is somewhat more expensive. If your budget requires a less expensive option, there are hotel rooms available that have shared baths, and hotels outside the city centre are cheaper.

When to go

Overall, Munich is a city popular with tourists and an important commercial destination, so hotels tend to fill up quickly throughout the year. Advance reservations are always a good idea, especially for rooms from May through October, when you’ll need to book well ahead.

Where to stay

For pure luxury in the city centre, the top two choices are the Bayerischer Hof and the Vier Jahreszeiten. Many celebrities and members of royalty have stayed at these palatial establishments. Their restaurants are famous and rather exclusive, and the food as well as the ambience makes them well worth visiting. However, as you might expect, they are quite pricey.

A few of the hotels in the moderate range are in or near the centre. The modern Regent Hotel is quite near the pedestrian area in the centre of Munich, close to restaurants, shops and cultural venues. The Hotel Carmen is also close to the centre, situated in a quiet area. Its restaurant features Indian cuisine and other international dishes.

Business travellers and tourists find the Condor Hotel a convenient choice, with its location between the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof) and the famous Stachus shopping area. This hotel is also next to the pedestrian area, and the trade fair centre is only a few minutes by subway. Many of the guest rooms overlook the hotel's lovely courtyard.
