Be Safe in Munich

Munich is considered a safe place to visit, as there are not a large number of safety-threatening incidents directed against tourists. Visitors are well received by locals and safety is generally taken seriously. No significant health risks are present.

Safety

Munich is no different from many other large urban tourist destinations, in that it has its share of crime. The major problems facing visitors are petty theft in the forms of pick-pocketing and purse-snatching. Cameras carried on straps are also targeted. Most of these incidents occur in the most highly congested areas, and those most frequented by tourists, such as the area around the Marienplatz and the main train station (Hauptbahnhof), which can also be dangerous at night.

A number of tourists also lose their valuables when they leave their clothing and bags unattended as they join in the nude sunbathing in the Englischer Garten. If you have access to a hotel safe, it is recommended that you store your valuables there instead.

Health

Motor vehicle accidents are a leading cause of injury for tourists driving on the German autobahns, as they are generally unaccustomed to driving at the high-speeds that are the norm on these roads.

It is necessary to remain alert and be exceptionally careful while driving, taking notice of local driving customs and following defensive driving habits. If you have concerns about driving in Munich, hiring a local driver is a good idea.
