Leipzig Transport
Leipzig boasts one of Europe's most modern public transport systems. The transport network consists of trains, trams and buses and is managed by the Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe. There are 15 tram lines, three railway lines and more than 30 bus lines, all forming a reliable network of public transport.
By train
The S-Bahn is Germany’s railway network, which also runs through Austria and Switzerland. The name is an abbreviation for Stadtschnellbahn, which translates as ‘fast city train’. The S-Bahn is extremely efficient and follows a synchronised timetable using separate tracks, which allows for more trains per hour.

By bus
Leipzig offers travellers over 30 bus routes throughout the city and the surrounding suburbs. It is an extensive service, with many buses running per hour. It is possible to get virtually anywhere in the city by bus, although the city’s buses can get crowded, especially at peak times. Buses run throughout the day and into the night, with each route stopping at different times. Timetables can be found at bus stops and at tourist information offices throughout the city.
Taxis
The vast majority of taxis in Leipzig are owned by private companies. They can be hailed on the streets or booked in advance; your hotel should be able to assist with this. You will also find taxis at the airport, railway stations, outside major hotels and at all of the popular tourist spots.
Tourist services
Trams can still be seen frequently throughout the city and are ideal for tourists as they cover all of the most popular tourist sites and attractions. There are 13 tram lines in total, allowing passengers to travel right across the city. You only need one interchangeable ticket for trams and buses, and there is only one tariff, which is very practical if you are spending a day touring.
From the airport
If you are driving into the city from the airport, follow motorways A9 and A14, which will lead you directly to the city centre. The airport is just 11 miles outside of the city centre. For ground transfer options, you can either take a train, bus or a taxi. The Airport Express train runs regular services to and from the city, while the airport bus operates services twice an hour, taking just 30 minutes to get to Leipzig’s centre. Taxis can be found outside the Arrivals Hall of Terminal B.
