Be Safe in Heidelberg

Heidelberg is considered a very safe city in Germany, perhaps due to the fact that the majority of the population are students. However, when travelling in unfamiliar places, you always should be on your guard and practice common sense. Walking alone at night, especially if you are a women, can be dangerous, as anywhere else in the world. Avoid walking along the northern Neckar banks at night, especially near the Studentenwohnheime (students’ dorms), as the shrubs here are thick and this particular area is very poorly lit.

Pickpocketing can be quite problematic in the busy areas, just like any European city. Take extra care of your belongings while visiting tourist attractions or busy shopping areas. Also, watch out for cyclists, as they can lose their temper easily if you walk on their special lanes (painted in red). Students usually cycle to the university, so the lanes between Bismarkplatz and University Square are particularly crowded. People, especially students, often have their bikes stolen here. If you rent a bike to explore the city, always lock your bike when parking at the bike stands.

Generally, Heidelberg is very safe with low levels of crime. The town also boasts an excellent medical infrastructure. The weather does not get very hot, so sunstroke and dehydration are hardly a problem here. But, to be on the safe side, always carry a bottle of water with you and if you are prone to getting an upset stomach, avoid drinking tap water.

For healthcare, EU citizens benefit from reciprocal healthcare arrangements, but if you are from a country that is outside of Europe, make sure you take out travel insurance that covers hospital costs. Pharmacies are called ‘Apotheke’ in German and can be found everywhere in town.
