What to see
One of the oldest buildings still standing after WWII is the Old Town Hall. The building took over a century to complete and therefore integrates several architectural styles. The largest collection of old buildings can be found in Hannovers Old Town, where the faades of old houses were relocated and restored during the post-war reconstruction period.
Both the architecture and the exhibits filling the building are of interest at the Sprengel Museum of Modern Art. The New Town Hall makes up for what it lacks in history, in style. In this stately structure, there is an inclined lift that takes visitors up to enjoy the views over the city. An afternoon stroll through the Herrenhuser Grten is also delightful. The gardens were modeled after those in Versailles and host the International Fireworks Competition from May to September every year.
Hannovers large pedestrian area, known as the Kropcke, is an excellent place to stroll, people-watch and shop. At Christmas, a large market is set up in the square. The Opera House is located in the same area. In recent times, Hannover has perhaps beenmost famous for the Expo 2000 grounds and Hannover Zoo.
Daytrips
The Hanover region is a great place for cyclists, horseback riders and golfers. The beautiful scenery includes Ginseng Gardens and the largest bird park in the world. The Lower Saxony ticket is a great deal, allowing for discounted travel throughout the region and on Hannover public transportation.
Activities and leisure
There are plenty of excellent beer gardens to be enjoyed in Hannover, as in the rest of Germany, but there are other options for nightlife as well. Many live music venues are concentrated near Central Station and there are plenty of places for dancing or enjoying a pint at a traditional pub. The Opera House hosts a variety of events during the year including classical music and ballet performances.
Safety issues
Hannover is a very safe city whether you are alone, on foot, using public transportation or taking a taxi at night. Tourists are occasionally targeted by pickpockets and these petty thieves often operate at large events and festivals. Be particularly cautious if you visit during Oktoberfest beer festival when you are most likely to let your guard down.
