Be Safe in Hannover

Hannover is the kind of modern, safe town tourists should expect to find in Germany. The rule of law is followed and the police are efficient. There are occasional pickpockets to be careful of, particularly at certain large events. Those not used to trams should be careful to pay attention when a bell rings, as it is not always a bicycle!

Safety

Hannover is extremely safe for tourists and there is little violent crime. Public transportation, including taxis, can be used with no problem at any time of the day. It is also safe for women on their own at night. Hannover can also be explored on foot. The people of Hannover even boast that their children can attend football matches on their own. The biggest concern for tourists is probably pickpockets, who can be found at the big exhibitions, particularly Cebit; and tourists attending the Oktoberfest, which is a German beer festival, should take care of their belongings, particularly if enjoying the revelry.

Health

There is very little to worry about health-wise in Hannover. As in most of Germany, the sanitation system is excellent, so there are no worries about water-borne illnesses. Food preparation is also of a very high standard, so there should be no stomach complaints. It is advisable, however, for tourists from outside the EU to arrange travel insurance to cover any hospital costs. Tourists from the EU can enjoy reciprocal health agreements.
