Hannover has an ever increasing variety of restaurants and eateries that cater to all tastes. It is possible to find everything from friendly pubs to top-rate gourmet restaurants, speciality cuisine to American-style food. However, there are also many places serving down-to-earth local food.

Local cuisine

The local food of Hannover is based around meat, potatoes and asparagus during springtime. In winter, kale is featured more prominently on menus. This local Hannoverian cuisine can be found in the many brewpubs and biergartens of Hannover. Of course, the more famous German dishes of sausages, sauerkraut, bratwurst and pommes fritte also feature prominently, being available at most places.

This is typical German cuisine that is best served with some of the local beer. Currywurst is a local dish that was popular with ex-Chancellor Schroeder. The local dessert is welfenpudding, which is a white desert with a yellow topping that matches the arms colours of the old Welfen family, who once ran Hannover in medieval times. It is also extremely rich and fattening. Hannover also caters quite well for vegetarians.

The food stalls in the market hall offer a wide range of food at cheap prices in an interesting setting. Kropcke still remains one of the main areas for eating out, and it offers a variety of dishes including international food with a range of prices.
