Hamburg Weather

Hamburg is known as a rather wet and windy city, with westerly winds blowing in damp air from the North Sea.

Summer and spring

Summers are warm but rainy, with intermittent short and dry sunny periods. Spring is very nice in Hamburg, when the city's thousands of trees come into flower with a new shroud of green, and days start to warm up after the dull winter.

Chilly winters

Winters are cold, at times chilling, with temperatures dropping to 2°C or below in January. It is in the winter that the Elbe begins to freeze, in spite of its salt content and tidal movement. The Alster lakes in the city centre of Hamburg freeze over enough for much of the city's population to be out ice skating. Snowfall is usually light, starting in early December, with icy sleet being the more common form of winter precipitation.
