As an EU country, Germany has reciprocal health agreements with other member states under the European Health Insurance Card. Each country has different rules about state medical provision. Some treatment may be free, but often you will have to pay part or all of the cost and then claim a refund. The card gives access to medical treatment only and does not cover repatriation costs or ongoing illnesses. A comprehensive insurance policy is the only way of guaranteeing full cover.
