‘Commercial hospitality’ is a long-standing tradition in Frankfurt. Merchants have been visiting the city for hundreds of years and there are now over 160 hotels, guesthouses and hostels, with 22,000 beds catering to 2.5 million visitors annually. Frankfurt is still a place for people in transit rather than for long-term visitors and the average stay is just two days. Accommodation ranges from small, family-run guesthouses to upmarket hotels offering every imaginable luxury.

When to visit

There are many trade fairs in Frankfurt throughout the year, so you should plan and book your accommodation accordingly. Prices can be expensive during trade fairs, when even the cheapest hotels will suddenly increase their rates. Note that many of the top business hotels drop their prices at weekends.

Where to stay

There is a good choice of hotels in the Bahnhofsviertel (around the main station). The quality can vary considerably, although the prices don't always reflect this. Be sure to check the exact location of the hotel, as this area is also home to Frankfurt's red light district. A good choice for comfortable accommodation is the district of Westend, near the Exhibition Centre. There are also a number of small and charming guesthouses here. If you prefer to stay in the city centre then the Hotel Zentrum Hauptwache and the Hotel am Dom are both good options.

Frankfurt has a range of alternative accommodation such as The Mozart, near the Alte Oper, decorated entirely in pink and white. One of the most interesting lodgings in the area is the Hotelschiff Peter Schlott, which is situated aboard a ship that is anchored in the River Main.
