Dusseldorf Transport

The local public transport in Dusseldorf and the surrounding areas is operated by the Rheinbahn. This includes the tram, bus and underground services in Dusseldorf, a network covering more than 800 miles of routes. The trade fair site and the airport can both be easily reached without having to deal with road traffic that is common within the city centre.

There is a Dusseldorf Welcome Card that you can purchase on arrival which entitles you to, among other things, rides on all buses and trams within the city for a specified period, free-of-charge. The card can be purchased from the Dusseldorf Tourist Association (Verkehrsverein Düsseldorf) as well as at many hotels, advance sales offices of the Rheinische Bahngesellschaft and other locations throughout the city.

By Metro

There is an underground rail system, with several lines of service. A map is available at any of the stations and at most hotels. If you are travelling longer distances, you'll find that the U-Bahn will get you to your destination quickly. For example, the U-Bahn covers the distance from the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof) to the Old Town (Altstadt) in around three minutes.

By train

The main train station (Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof) is located at Konrad Adenauer Platz, in the southeastern section of the city. There are frequent connections to all major cities from this station. The travel time to Frankfurt is about 2 hours, 30 minutes and to Munich, about 7 hours. For information, you can call: +49 1805 996633. There are also extensive regional links from Dusseldorf. For information on regional trains or trams, call: +49 211 58228. Left luggage facilities are available at the Hauptbahnhof.

There are interesting tram tours offered by the Rheinbahn to various spots such
as breweries and vineyards (both with tours and tasting) and the historic Altstadt. Reservations are strongly recommended for these special tours.

By bus

City tour buses depart from two different locations in the centre. The first bus leaves from the intersection of Königsallee and Steinstrasse; the other from outside the central station (Hauptbahnhof). Buses run frequently and on time. On the outskirts of the city, you will find some park-and-ride stops, where you can park your car for the day and take a bus into the centre.

Taxis

Taxis are plentiful in Dusseldorf and you will find them most everywhere. Many visitors choose to walk around the city to see the main sights, but there are also taxi tours available, offering individualised city tours with specially-trained drivers. Depending on traffic conditions, a tour lasts up to about 2 hours. Your hotel will be able to arrange this type of tour for you.

Tourist services

You can buy a Dusseldorf Welcome Card, which entitles you to a period of free transport in the city and large discounts on entrance fees to the main attractions (sometimes even free entry). You can buy the card at Dusseldorf tourist information offices, many hotels and also at the ticket sales offices of the Rheinbahn public transport system. The tourist information offices provide maps and guides, and information on accommodation and services throughout the city.

From the airport

The SkyTrain is a fully automatic monorail connecting the airport's rail station to the terminals. It operates daily between the terminal and the airport rail station from 03:45 to 00:45. It only takes five minutes for the trip between the two end stations. There are some tickets which will allow you free transport on the system including: valid VRR tickets, DB tickets, Rail & Fly tickets, parking tickets for Apcoa Autoparking GmbH and tickets for the Dusseldorf International Airport observation deck. It you don’t have any of these tickets, you can purchase a short-trip rail ticket at SkyTrain stations.

Taking the train from Dusseldorf Airport rail station to the city centre is a good alternative to driving. The airport is also directly connected to the major routes on the European rail network. About 300 trains a day stop at the airport rail station including ICE, IC, EC and local train service. The airport is linked to the German rail network.

Buses operate services to the city centre and leave from in front of central Arrivals. Taxis to central Dusseldorf are available, and depending on traffic, takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
