Travel to Dresden

Nestled on the huge River Elbe, Dresden boasts a beautiful setting and offers plenty of quality attractions. There are many magnificent buildings to look at including churches, museums and galleries. There are alsonumerous parks and gardens offering opportunities for strolling and relaxing.

Transportation to Dresden

Dresden Klotsche Airport lies to the north of the city and provides direct access from many other German centres and cities Europe-wide; flights also come in direct from northern Africa. It is straightforward to get to the city from the airport, with trains, buses and taxis all providing access. Travelling to Dresden by train is also a good option and major motorways make light of Dresdens fairly remote location, making travelling here by car veryconvenient.

What to see

Dresden has some outstanding churches and museums that show off Baroque architecture at its very best and although much of the city was flattened during the war, the most important historical buildings have been rebuilt or renovated to their former glory. The opulent Zwinger Palace, Frauenkirche church, Albertinum Museum and the Groer Garten are all star attractions, while the Dresden Semper Opera House provides even more cultural prowess for the city.

Daytrips

There are some great daytrips to be had that are an easy drive from Dresden. The Kirnitzsch Valley is ideal for lovers of the great outdoors and is a perfect picture in the summer, with Bad Schandau is its main attraction. The Saxon Switzerland National Park is also a must-see and boasts the beautiful Lichtenhain Waterfall, while the nearby Garden City in the Hellerau district is also stunning. Dresden also happens to be very close to the borders of Poland and the Czech Republic, with Wroclaw and Prague only a couple of hours away by car.

Activities and leisure

The River Elbe and the many city parks provide ample opportunity toenjoy peace and quiet within the city or to partake in some walking, cycling or rollerblading. Shopping is also on the agenda, especially around Ferdinandplatz and Sankt-Petersburger Strae, while the Neustadt (New Town) is bustling with numerousshops, restaurants and bars.

Safety issues

As with anywhere, pickpockets inhabit the streets of Dresden and tourist hotspots as well as bus and train stations and tourists are, unfortunately, more susceptible when on holiday. Driving in unfamiliar surroundings and on the other side of the road also places tourists at a greater risk of having an accident. We recommend that you take out comprehensive travel insurance for yourself and your family when visiting Dresden.
