Dresden Leisure
Leisure options in Dresden are fairly slim when compared with other major European cities, although those into walking and cycling will find many options along the beautiful River Elbe, in and around the city and in the many parks. There are also several sports clubs in Dresden and the shopping here is excellent.
Sports clubs
Dresden is home to a number of good sports clubs and teams including an American football team as well as soccer, ice hockey and volleyball teams. The most successful team is Dynamo Dresden, who used to be in the Bundesliga and regularly play at the Rudolf Harbig Stadion.
Walking and cycling
There is some great walking and cycling paths in and around Dresden, particularly along the banks of the River Elbe, Germany’s second longest river. Visitors can walk, cycle and rollerblade along the many trails along its banks. The best side of the river for blading is the Old Town side, while Großer Garten (Great Garden), to the southeast of the city, offers fabulous walking. The River Elbe is also home to many old paddle-steamers, and many boat tours to Meissen and Pillnitz depart from the city.
Shopping
Shopping is another popular leisure option in Dresden, and the busiest thoroughfare runs from Ferdinandplatz to Sankt-Petersburger Straße. There are some quality department stores in this area as well as cinemas and restaurants.
