Travel to Bremen

From its beginnings as a small fishing village, Bremen, Germanys oldest coastal town has grown to become one of the countrys major ports. Today, Bremen is a modern international city that allures visitors from all over the world with thearomas of succulent fruit, coffee, lumber and tobacco, which permeate the city.

Transportation to Bremen

Bremen is served by Bremen Airport, which is about three kilometers southeast of the city, and is easily accessible by car, taxi, tram and train. S-Bahn tram 5 goes directly from the airport to the centre of Bremen city, and the autobahns A7 east and west, and the A27 north and south take you directly to Bremen by road.

You can also get to Bremen by the frequent trains that run from the major cities across Germany. There are 30 train departures dailyfrom Hamburg to Bremen, a journey that takes about an hour. The 35 trains that arrive from Hanover daily also take an hour. Thirteen trains come from Berlin each day on a 5-hour trip, and 50 trains depart from Frankfurt for Bremen, taking about 4 hours, 15 minutes to arrive.

What to see

Like most cities in Europe, Bremen is blessed with a cultural array of museums and architecture. Witness the St Peters Cathedral (Dom St Petri), which dominates the skyline of the Altstadt (Old Town), while some of the most beautiful German and French art of the 19th and 20th centuries can be viewed at the Kunsthalle Art Gallery.

At the Focke Museum, considered one of the best regional museums in Germany, you can get a detailed history of the city and its outskirts. Also,the 560-year-old Rathaus (Town Hall) in the bustling market square is not to be missed.

Daytrips

For regional history and picturesque landscapes, a visit to Vegesack which isa maritime outpost on the River Weser just 20kms outside of Bremen, is a definite must-see. For the flurry of a big city, Hamburg, Germanys principal port city and the biggest city closest to Bremen, is just a 100km drive away.

Activities and leisure

World famous German torte and beer are for the taking at the Altstadt. Visitors will also findan assortment of quaint stores, good cafs and restaurants to sit, relax and have a good meal. The Obernstrasse and Sogestrasse are paradise for shopaholics, and there are many very goodboutiques in the Schnoor quarter of the city.

Safety issues

Bremen is a reasonably safe city. As visitors tend to be more prone to mishaps while they are on vacation and in an unusual environment, caution should always be exercised when taking in what the city has to offer. It is thus advisable to take out travel insurance before going on holiday.
