Charming and small yet modern and cultural, Bonn is one of the most pleasant cities in the Rhineland. Between the excellent universities and the legacy of Beethoven, Bonn prides itself on a cultured sophistication usually only reserved for larger cities. With its well-preserved Old Town, the lovely Rhine River and some fascinating traditional neighbourhoods, there is a lot to see and do. Festivals fill the warm summer months and the student population keeps things hopping the rest of the time.

What to see
Much of Bonns charm lies in the character of the city itself and the people who live here. From the Old Town to the lively student district and medieval neighbourhoods, simply wandering around Bonn is half the fun. The Museum Mile is lined with different kinds of museums and cultural centres, with collections ranging from artefacts from the ancient past to modern art.
The dining scene in Bonn is on a par with cities twice its size such as Frankfurt and Berlin. Its reputation as an international city extends to the numerous ethnic restaurants, ensuring that you will never run out of ideas for eating. After the sun goes down, Bonn comes alive with everything from symphonic chamber music to live jazz. Beethovens legacy can be seen in the passion with which Bonn supports music and the arts. Each summer, the city plays host to one of the best classical music festivals in the world, the Beethoven Festival.
Daytrips
The Rhine Valley is one of the most picturesque regions of Europe, and Bonn lies right in the heart of it. Mountains, lakes, forests and of course, the timeless Rhine River, are all just outside the city, waiting to be explored. Rent a car and tour the vineyards and castles that dot the lush countryside of Rhineland.
Activities and leisure
There isnt a tremendous amount of recreational opportunity within the city itself. The Rhine River offers a great environment for boating and fishing, but if you really want to pursue some amazing outdoor action, you wont have to go far. The Siebengebirge Mountains can be seen from the city and are a great place for hiking and biking. The winding loops of the Sieg River and the Wahnbach Reservoir mean that you can enjoy boating, rafting and fishing in this area as well. Some of the golf courses in the Rhine Valley are considered among the best in Europe.
Safety issues
Bonn is one of the safer cities in Germany and if you use common sense, you shouldnt run into any major problems during your visit. Violent crime against visitors is rare and the worst thing that youre likely to have to worry about is the pickpockets at the train station. However, it is strongly suggested that you buy some travel insurance before your trip to ensure that any mishaps dont ruin your holiday.
