Be Safe in Bonn

Although violent crimes are uncommon in Bonn, thieves and pickpockets still stalk the major tourist areas to prey on the hoards of tourists. You should not, however, experience any unusual health problems when visiting Bonn.

Safety

Like most popular European cities, the crowded tourist areas also attract their share of pickpockets and bag snatchers. Fortunately, violent crimes against tourists are rare, so you should not feel nervous about going out after dark. Always keep your valuables out of sight and your camera or bag slung securely across your shoulder. This should deter most would-be thieves. Also, try and stick to the more populated nightlife areas when you go out late at night; wandering around unfamiliar neighbourhoods is an easy way to run into trouble.

Health

There are no health risks in Bonn which merit mention. Germany takes a great deal of pride in its high levels of sanitation and public health. The tap water is perfectly safe to drink, although its not as tasty as bottled water, and the food in restaurants is prepared to the highest international standards. Even the street stall food should cause no reason for concern; just make sure your food has been adequately cooked.

If anything does happen during your visit, there are excellent medical facilities right in Bonn. Many of the staff and doctors speak English, and can assist with any problems. Citizens of the EU should be covered by their own insurance plan, but visitors from other countries should get some travel insurance to cover any unexpected hospital costs. The price of travel insurance is very small compared to a German medical bill.
