Berlin is a massive city and has enough lodging options to make your head swim. As tourism continues to increase in the city, room prices have been falling as more and more hotels are built. The choice of lodging ranges from astronomically expensive luxury rooms to backpacker hostels, and everything in between. The only downside is that most hotels won’t let you check in until 14:00, which can be very inconvenient for early arrivals.

Where to stay

Berlin is a city with two centres. There’s a concentration of accommodation around Unter den Linden in the eastern area and around Kurfurstendamm in the west, although the western centre definitely has more to choose from. Pensions are the cheapest decent lodgings in town and are mainly clustered in the western districts of Charlottenburg, Schoneberg and Wilmersdorf. Hostels are even cheaper, and are springing up all over the city like mushrooms, filling the demand. If you don’t mind the communal atmosphere and basic amenities, these places can be quite comfortable.

Many of Berlin’s newest luxury hotels are going up in the eastern section of the city, such as the legendary Adlon or the Four Seasons. However, moderately-priced hotels and pensions are still scarce on this side of the city.

When to visit

Berlin is a major site for international conventions, trade fairs and festivals. Although these events happen year-round, they peak during the mid-summer months and over Christmas. Business travellers as well as tourists tend to stay in the western district of Kurfurstendamm, so if you plan to visit during these peak months, you should make a reservation well in advance.

Consider visiting during the autumn months of September and October, when the crowds are low and the weather excellent. Spring is also a pleasant time of year for a visit. Many hotels, especially luxury ones, reduce their room rates during the low season. Conversely, many big hotels raise their rates during the convention seasons.
