Things To Do In Strasbourg

Despite being in the middle of several wars over the last century, Strasbourg has managed to retain much of its old style. The covered bridges and towers from ancient fortifications, as well as many 15th through 17th century timbered buildings still exist in their original state. Its ancient streets, monuments and wealth of museums provide visitors with ample distractions. Strasbourg also has a modern side, with some excellent dining, shopping and entertainment. The university scene provides a dynamic atmosphere to mix with the traditional face of the city. It’s easy to explore Strasbourg on foot, which is always the best way to experience a place, and the broad lazy rivers round off the enchanting ambiance of this city.

La Petite France

This is without doubt the city’s most beautiful and enchanting neighbourhood. Like an island, it is surrounded by scenic canals on four sides, with bridges connecting it with the rest of the city. The narrow cobblestone streets are perfect for wandering around and soaking in the ambiance of the 16th century houses, with their old roofs and Alsatian-style timbered beams. One of the best strolls is along the rue des Moulins, where the houses are reflected in the water of the canals.

Ill River

One of the most romantic ways to explore Strasbourg is by taking a boat along this river from the Rohan Palace. The views from the river are wonderful and the 75-minute ride is very reasonably priced. Commentary is given in six languages about the sites along the way.

Notre-Dame Cathedral

This is the city’s crown jewel of Gothic architecture and one of the most impressive cathedrals in Europe. Its stunning pink sandstone façade was begun in 1176 and completed in 1439, and is richly decorated with medieval tympanums and carvings. The incredible features of this structure are too extensive to list. It simply must be seen to be appreciated. The cathedral is also home to one of Europe’s first astronomical clocks, built in 1574. This grand timepiece still works and has its own daily interpretive tours. The church is still used for religious rites and hosts the city’s main religious celebrations. The courtyard is home to the city’s hugely popular Christmas market.

Rohan Palace

Built from 1732 to 1742 and considered a masterpiece of architectural elegance and proportion. It is noted for its elaborate façades and Rococo interior, and houses a fine arts museum on the first floor. The ground floor houses the original machinery of the cathedral’s astronomical clock as well as an extensive collection of artefacts from the city’s long history.

Museum of Modern Art

Located in the heart of La Petite France, this is the city’s showcase of modern European art. The museum’s collection dates from 1870 to the present and includes many famous artists from around Europe. There is also an art library, graphic art and photography room, museum shop and a restaurant on the terrace.

Museum of lOeuvre Notre-Dame

Best illustrates the art of Strasbourg and Alsace from the Middle Ages and Renaissance period. There are some wonderful pieces including a stained glass head of Christ from the 11th century. The collection of sculpture is very impressive, as are the works of Strasbourg goldsmiths from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Alsatian Museum

This museum is housed in three mansions dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is a living exhibition of the customs and folklore of the Alsatian region, with arts, crafts and tools from the old province.

Eglise St Thomas

This Protestant church, built between 1230 and 1330, has five impressive naves. It also contains the famous 1777 mausoleum of Marechal de Saxe, one of the masterpieces created by Pigalle, the French artist.

European Parliament

These three conjoined buildings are home to the Hemicycle, where parliamentary sessions take place. Tours are available, which give an introduction to the history and role of this institution. Live debates may be viewed from the visitors’ gallery at certain times, but it is highly recommended to call and reserve your place well in advance.

Europa Park
This is an amusement park located just outside of town. With over 100 rides, shows and attractions, the park has been providing a family European experience for more than 25 years.
