Strasbourg Restaurants

The Alsace region is considered to have some of the best cuisine in France and that’s saying something. Traditional dishes have an interesting blend of German roots with the French attention to detail and flair. Top it all off with one of the many wonderful Alsatian wines and you’ll have no trouble finding an enjoyable meal in any of the dozens of top-notch restaurants in Strasbourg.

Local cuisine

Alsace specialises in hearty dishes such as baeckoffe, a delicious stew made from pork, beef and lamb with potato and spices. The standard dish, coq au Riesling, uses locally-made Riesling wine and is often served over fresh spaetzle, and choucroute garnie, is a steaming plate of Strasbourg sausage, ham and bacon atop a mound of sauerkraut. Foie gras was invented in Strasbourg and Alsatian deserts are not to be missed. Don’t pass up the elegant Alsatian white wines, which are world renowned. This region produces Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, which are among the best wines in the world. Local winstubs are the best place to go for a sample of these light, tart wines as well as the local fruit liquor called eau de vie, which literally translates as ‘water of life’.

Where to eat

Strasbourg has 28 Michelin-starred restaurants, so there is plenty of high quality dining to choose from. The leading restaurant for fine dining is Relais de la Poste, a cosy timbered house in the heart of the city. The chefs prepare different menus as the seasons change. Au Crocodile serves some of the most creative food in the city under a lovely open glass ceiling. Le Restaurant Westermann is the home of famed chef Antoine Westermann, who first started this region’s modern cuisine movement. Its prime location in the park l’Orangerie is an added bonus to the excellent cuisine.
