Things to do in Rennes
Rennes has a nice mix of attractions both old and new. The medieval quarter is one of the highlights and a great place to take a stroll. There are a number of interesting museums and the beautiful Thabor Park is said to be one of the finest in France.
Parliament of Brittany (Parlement de Bretagne)
This is probably the most famous building in the city, originally built in the 17th century. The building escaped the fire that struck the city in the early 18th century, but was severely damaged by fire in 1994, and subsequently rebuilt. The building is a landmark in the city and an impressive sight with its range of shining statues.
Museum of Fine Arts (Muse des Beaux-Arts)
Rennes’ fine art museum is well worth a visit with a good range of sculptures and paintings from the 12th to the 19th centuries. The most significant collection is that dedicated to the famous Pont-Aven school, an art movement heavily influenced by Paul Gaugin in the late 19th century. There is also an interesting ‘curiosity gallery’ of 18th century pieces. Phone: +33 223 621 745 Web: www.mbar.org
Medieval quarter
The medieval quarter is a fascinating place to wander around. The area is bordered by both the canal and the river and is particularly good to visit on a Saturday when the area bustles with a large street market in the Place des Lices. The Porte Mordelaise is an impressive structure, and once marked the entrance to the city.
St Peters Cathedral (Cathdrale St-Pierre)
The city’s cathedral was built on the site of two churches, dating to the 4th century, and was re-built between 1787 and 1844. It is something of a focal point in the old town with its neoclassical interior and grand façade. The cathedral is open for visitors in the morning and late afternoon and is well worth a visit.
The Park of Thabor (Parc du Thabor)
This stunning park was established on 10 hectares in the late 19th century, and provides a delightful respite from the city. The park includes an orange grove, a rose garden, formal French garden and an aviary. It is considered one of the most beautiful parks in the country and is a great place to go for a quiet walk.
La Place de la Mairie
One of Rennes’ most famous squares, La Place de la Mairie has seen its share of political demonstrations over the years, with angry farmers and students having their say on various important issues. It is also a great place to wander the cobblestone street, dominated by the opera house. There are a number of small stalls to buy waffles and other snacks; a definite place for people watching.
Rennes Cultural Centre (Les Champs Libres)
Champs Libres is an interesting place to visit, housing both the Brittany Museum and the Science Centre. The Brittany museum has a range of displays focusing on Breton culture and history and has a number of temporary special exhibitions throughout the year. The Science Centre contains both a planetarium and science museum, with plenty of things for the kids. There is also a library within the complex which is well served by metro and bus. Saint-Germain Church
Built in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Saint-Germain Church has some excellent stained glass windows displaying various scenes in the lives of Jesus Christ, St John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary, some of these date back to the time the church was built but there are also some modern designs.
