Theatre and music
It is possible to enjoy operatic performances in Paris, with the two most prestigious opera houses being Opéra Garnier and modern Opéra Bastille. Between them, these two venues offer both classical and contemporary ballet and opera. The theatre scene is also thriving in Paris, with theatre holding a significant spot in Parisian culture. Major theatres include Bobino, Mogador and the Théâtre de la Gaîté-Montparnasse.
For musical performances, many of the city’s theatres also act as concert halls, with famous French and international singers and musicians regularly taking to the stage. The New Morning is host to jazz and indy concerts, while the Zenith and the parc-omnisports stadium in Bercy host large-scale concerts.
Festivals
Paris has a busy calendar of events, with something happening every month of the year. Highlights include:
- Paris Jazz Festival, held on every Saturday and Sunday afternoon from late June to the end of July, this huge cultural event attracts jazz performers from across the globe that play out to audiences on the lawns of the Vallée des Fleurs.
- Le Tour de France, France’s most famous cycling event, culminates in August when the entrants race along the Champs-Elysées in an attempt to reach the finishing point first.
- Paris Film Festival begins in March, with the Gaumont Marignan cinema serving as the centre for screenings. Films include those directed by both French and European directors, with the cinemas of the Odéon district coming alive.
- Paris Fashion Week catches the attention of the world. As a leader in world fashion and home to Chanel, this annual event is well publicised in the media, with several events open to members of the public who manage to get tickets.
