Travel to Orleans

Only an hour from Paris by car, Orleans is more than just a quick daytrip from the capital. Although it makes a pleasant afternoon excursion, it would take at least three days to really explore and enjoy the large number of elegant chateaux in the city alone, let alone appreciate the beauty of the Loire Valley.

Transportation to Orleans

Many people fly into Charles de Gaulle or Orly international airports in Paris and then proceed to Orleans by car, bus or train. If driving, the trip from Paris should take about an hour and is well marked. Buses from Orleans are a great way to get out of the city and explore the surrounding Loire Valley.

What to see

In a country known for its cathedrals, Sainte Croix is one of the biggest and most beautiful. The stonework on the exterior of this building is striking, to say nothing of the interior. Another of the main landmarks in the city is the Hotel Groslot. Inside are a number of beautiful paintings and pictures as well as furniture from the Renaissance period. The small garden behind the hotel is cosy and romantic; a great place to sit and reflect amid the ruins of the Saint Jacques Chapel.

Once the citys main cemetery, Campo Santo has been renovated and re-modeled. The area is now home to the Visual Arts Institute and hosts a number of cultural fairs during the year. The ancient archways are still stunning.

Three of Orleans main streets come together at the Place du Martroi. A good place to see and be seen, or to sit under the statue of Joan of Arc. It is also a great place to shop in December when the entire space is taken up with a large holiday market. Joan of Arcs old residence can still be visited. Although the original house where she stayed as a guest burnt down, it wouldnt be a visit to Orleans without exploring the reproduction to get a better idea of why the city is cluttered with so many statues and reproductions of the historic woman. Today, some of the best shopping in the city is located along the avenue named after the heroine.

Daytrips

The Loire Valley is a beautiful place to explore by car or by bicycle. The area is full of quaint towns and elegant castles, including the Chateau de Colliers near Chambord.

Activities and leisure

While many people make the short trip to Paris for a night out on the town, Orleans has its own share of entertainment options. Rue de Bourgogne and rue Bannier house many of the best nightclubs including English-style pubs and great jazz clubs. Traditional and contemporary theatre as well as opera and symphony are performed at several venues.

Safety issues

As a tourist, you should be especially careful with your wallet and purse as pickpockets and bag snatchers here tend to target visitors. For passports and other valuables, take advantage of your hotel safe, and always be cautious when travelling at night. Overall, Orleans is a relatively safe, calm and peaceful city.
