Transportation to Montpellier
Montpellier boasts a modern, fully-equipped airport that receives flights from more than 50 destinations in the country. The airport also connects Montpellier with other parts of Europe. Alternatively, you can hop on a TGV train which will provide a speedy ride from most major French towns. Driving to Montpellier is also easy via the A9 motorway.
What to see
A must-visit place you cannot afford to miss is the Botanicals Gardens, the first of its kind in the country. You will find a variety of plant species and many beautiful plants. Those with artistic souls should head over to Fabre Museum, home to a selection of paintings and sculptures from all over the world. The Flaugergues Castle is a favourite place among those travelling with children. The old castle boasts magnificent furniture and an exquisite interior, injecting romance into the air, while the garden hosts wine-tasting sessions.
Daytrips
If you have seen everything the city has to offer, why not head out to the countryside to visit some lovely little villages with old world charm. About 50kms from the city are two noteworthy small villages called St Guilhem le Desert and Mourze. St Guilhem le Desert is ideal for those into art as there are plenty of hidden studios, while its square is charming with a pretty fountain. Nature lovers will love Mourze, a green village famous for its unusual rock formation.

Visitors usually flock to Montpellier in June and July to join the hearty festivals the city organises for music junkies. Expect to find spectacular stage performances and music shows the feature jazz and opera. Also known for its gastronomic delight, Montpellier offers a full range of exquisite French cuisines and lip-smacking red and white wines. Those looking for a night of fun will also find an array of nightclubs and bars scattered in the city.
Safety issues
Montpellier is considered quite safe compared to other French cities. As a student hub, the city is not flooded with criminals and petty theft and pick-pocketing are very rare. However, keep an eye on your belongings. Do not wander around in the city at night on your own, especially if you are a woman. It is highly recommended that you take out travel insurance before visiting Montpellier.
