In the past, no one ever went to Monaco during the hot summer months, as the wealthy have the distinctive advantage of being able to travel whenever they choose. However, as Monaco has opened up more middle-class accommodations, the peak holiday months of July and August are now so crowded that most reasonably priced hotels are fully booked months in advance. Over the past couple of decades, Monaco has been trying to develop a broader tourism base to bring in more visitors. That’s not to say there’s anything even remotely cheap in Monaco, with the lower priced rooms still averaging at the same price as you would expect to pay for an upmarket hotel in Europe, which is moderate considering where you are.
Budget
The cheapest place to stay within Monaco is at the youth hostel located in the Hotel le Versailles near the railway station. But this style of lodging won’t appeal to many and it’s still not particularly cheap. If you are really trying to stay on a budget, the best thing to do is to stay in one of the small towns just outside Monaco, like Ventimiglia or Nice. You can save a few euros and it’s easy to commute. Over 75 per cent of Monaco’s rooms are rated as four-star deluxe and up.

Luxurious
For a truly luxurious experience, you will need to stay in Monaco’s most celebrated hotel, the Hotel de Paris. Built in 1864, it put Monaco on the map as Europe’s playground for the rich and famous. However, the starting rate for rooms here is extremely expensive. The other great hotel in Monaco is the Hotel Hermitage, with its frescoed hallways and beautiful gardens.
High Season
In general, the best time to visit Monaco is from May to October, even though July and August are often hot and humid. Everything is open, crowded and buzzing with activity. Most hotel rooms will be fully booked during this period, especially the cheaper ones, but even the most outrageously expensive ones will be full because the world has plenty of millionaires. Always book your room online as far in advance as you can. The low season of winter, spring and fall sees a very different Monaco. Winter is too cool for swimming or lying on the beach and many attractions are closed. However, the upside is that there are no crowds, it’s easy to get dinner reservations and hotel rates are often a third less than during the summer.
